Utility vehicle manufacturer Scania and Swedish Northvolt signed an agreement to jointly develop and commercialise battery cell tech for heavy duty vehicles. Scania says that it will invest 10m euros.

Both companies want to build up a common team that is going to be responsible for optimising production of battery cells specialised on electric utility vehicles. Moreover, the contract includes an off-take purchase agreement. The cooperation project will be situated in Northvolt’s research centre in Swedish Västerås.

Henrik Henriksson, Scania’s President and CEO, says that the cooperation shall help to encourage customers to select sustainable transport solutions. “Electrification will play a key part in the shift to a fossil free transport system. However, the current battery cell technology must be developed to fulfil the business requirements of heavy bus and truck customers.”
